Sea adventure: Holidays on the ferry to the land of fjords and aurorae

Holidays in Scandinavia ??? Sounds inviting, doesn’t it? If you dream of a holiday in the North and this in combination with a ferry cruise, this article is for you! A ferry trip to the land of fjords and vikings is the beginning of a holiday adventure that will remain forever in your memories.

General information about ferries and courses

Modern ferries to Scandinavia are real floating hotels. On their decks you will find restaurants serving Scandinavian cuisine, bars overlooking the sea, duty-free shops and many other attractions. For the youngest there are special play areas, and lovers of relaxation can use the saunas and wellness zones.

Overnight in a cabin with a window is an additional attraction – falling asleep with the sound of waves and waking up with a view of the open sea remain in memory for a long time. A ferry trip is also an opportunity to experience a foretaste of Scandinavian lifestyle, get to know local customs and taste regional dishes 😉

Ferries to Sweden run from Poland: from Gdańsk, Gdynia and Świnoujście to Swedish ports such as Ystad, Karlskrona and Nynäshamn. The journey usually takes between 6 and 18 hours, depending on the chosen route.

For those who are planning a further trip to Norway or Finland, the ferry is an excellent first stage. From Sweden, we can continue to travel by car or take advantage of further ferry connections between Scandinavian countries. Thanks to this, we can determine our own route, taking into account our preferences and the time we have.

It is worth remembering that ferry tickets are best booked several months in advance, especially if you are traveling in the summer season.

Scandinavia – what to see?

The Scandinavian regions offer countless attractions for every type of tourist.

Sweden impresses with the Stockholm archipelago with thousands of islands, medieval towns such as Visby on Gotland, or the wild forests and lakes of the Dalarna province. You will also find many museums dedicated to Scandinavian design.

The second of the countries, Norway is primarily the land of fjords – Geirangerfjord and Sognefjord are among the most beautiful in the world. The Atlantic Route or the ride on the famous Flåm Railway are unforgettable experiences for lovers of unique landscapes.

Denmark attracts its tourists with charming Copenhagen with its royal castles and palaces and the famous Nyhavn district. While in Denmark, you should see the Møns Cliffs and the sandy beaches of Jutland.

And finally – in my opinion the least appreciated – Finland is a land of thousands of lakes, extensive forests and an unusual sauna culture. Helsinki will delight you with its architecture, and Lapland will offer you a meeting with reindeers and the opportunity to experience a polar night or polar day.

When is the best time to go to Scandinavia?

The best time to travel to the Nordic countries is from May to September. Summer is a time of white nights, when the sun sets for only a few hours, and in the northern regions it stays above the horizon around the clock. It is an ideal time to admire fjords, hike in the mountains and enjoy numerous cultural festivals.

In winter Scandinavia offers completely different, but equally fascinating attractions – aurorae, winter sports, dog sledding rides or accommodation in ice hotels are just some of them 😉

Budget-driven holidays

Scandinavia has the reputation of a region quite expensive for tourists, but with proper planning, we can boldly organize a trip tailored to various budgets. Ferry travel is already a saving as it combines transport with accommodation;-)

It is worth considering accommodation in apartments with a kitchenette, which will allow you to prepare your own meals and significant savings. Camping is another popular option, especially since Scandinavian campsites stand at a very high level. When sailing by ferry, it is also worth considering traveling with your motorhome.

Holidays in Scandinavia is a proposal primarily for people who love beautiful landscapes, like contact with wild nature and like to spend time actively 😉 Whether you are planning a city break in Stockholm, a week-long trip along Norwegian fjords or a longer trip through all Scandinavian countries – a ferry is the gateway to discover Scandinavia….
