And this is our list of places to see if you’re in Denmark, especially if you’re going north or northwest.
Cape Skagen – Grenen, the northernmost point of Denmark
Greenland is one of Denmark’s most distinctive tourist attractions, located in the very north of Jutland. It is a narrow cape, the northernmost point of Denmark, and the meeting point of the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. It is a popular tourist destination. Grenen is a sandy cape that forms a narrow strip of land, surrounded by the waters of the seas.
The water at this point is relatively shallow. There is also a visible difference in the color of the waters. The Baltic Sea has a greenish color, and the waters of the North Sea are more blue. Grenen is also a place where many species of birds are hatched, as well as their migration. It is a perfect place to observe birds, especially in spring and summer. It takes about 30 minutes to get from the parking lot to the cape.
The church under the sand
Another, this time quite unusual tourist attraction is the “Church under the sand”, which is located near the village of Skagen, in northern Denmark. It is a church that has been partially buried by sand movements and over time has become one of the most interesting places in the region. The church was built as part of a medieval fishing village. Unfortunately, over the years, under the influence of strong winds and movements of sands, it began to be buried. This was due to a natural process in which sand and dunes moved towards the village. Over time, the church was almost completely buried. Now in memory of it there is a tower, and the outline of the church can be seen right next to it. An information board has been prepared for tourists, presenting in detail the entire history of this extraordinary place where nature won with human work…
Bulbjerg Knude Fuglefjeld cliff
While in Denmark, it is worth visiting the Bulbjerg Knude Fuglefjeld, a steep limestone cliff that rises about 47 meters above sea level located in the northern part of the country. It is a place that provides us wonderful views of the North Sea. The area is known for its natural beauty and bird reserve. There are several marked trails around Bulbjerg, from which you can enjoy views of the cliffs and the surrounding area. There is also a bunker, which you can enter.
Viking Cemetery – Lindholm Hoje
There will also be something for Viking enthusiasts 😉 Lindholm Hoje located in northern Denmark, near the city of Aalborg. It is one of the largest and best preserved burial sites of the Vikings in Scandinavia, from the Viking era (ca. 500 – 1000 AD). This place is located on the hill from which the name “Lindholm Hoje” comes from. The cemetery consists of about 700 stone grave mounds, which were built over the graves of high-placed Vikings. The mounds are arranged in a characteristic, often round or oval formation. Visitors can see not only the cemetery itself, but also reconstructions of buildings from that period and numerous everyday objects, thanks to which we can learn about the life of the inhabitants of medieval Scandinavia.
Lindholm Hoje is an extraordinary testimony to the culture of the Vikings and their ancestors, as well as an excellent history lesson for all visitors.
Rabjerg Mile – moving dune
And our last proposal is Rabjerg Mile, which is one of the largest dunes in Northern Europe, the surface of which is constantly shifting. Rabjerg Mile is a typical example of a moving dune that changes its position under the influence of wind. It moves to the southwest by about 15-20 meters per year. This implies that the landscape changes over time.
One of the main reasons why Rabjerg Mile attracts tourists is its unique landscape. Walking around Rabjerg Mile we can feel for a moment like on a real desert 🙂 even though it is actually part of the Danish coast.
