A city on water you have to see at least once in your life.

There are some places in the world that you just can’t mistake for anywhere else. Venice, this incredible Italian city built entirely on water, has been drawing millions of people for years. There are no cars, buses, or asphalt roads here. Instead, you’ll find hundreds of canals, charming bridges, and boats. Even though it can get crowded and expensive, this place has something magical about it. Why is it worth a visit and what should you see?

An unplanned walk is the best idea

The best way to explore Venice is just to wander aimlessly through its narrow streets. Away from the crowds, you’ll discover the true vibe of the city: quiet squares, small shops, and laundry drying over the streets. There’s something interesting around every corner.

Must-see spots If it’s your first time here, there are a few places you absolutely cannot miss:

  • St. Mark’s Square and Basilica: This is the heart of the city. The huge square surrounded by beautiful buildings is truly impressive, and the basilica itself is stunning with its golden decorations.
  • Rialto Bridge: The oldest and most famous bridge over the Grand Canal. It’s always packed with people, but the view of the gondolas and water buses passing underneath is unforgettable.
  • Doge’s Palace: The former home of the rulers, featuring incredible architecture. Right next to it, you’ll find the famous Bridge of Sighs.

Take a ride on a water bus

It’s hard to imagine a trip to Venice without a ride on a gondola or a water bus. Private gondolas are very expensive, but you can hop on a water bus, known as a vaporetto. Route number 1 takes you all the way down the Grand Canal. For the price of a regular ticket, you get a wonderful cruise where you can admire the beautiful old palaces right on the water.

Local eats

After a full day of walking, it’s nice to take a break in one of the traditional bars. Look for places that serve cicchetti. These are small, affordable snacks—like bite-sized sandwiches with seafood, cheese, or local cured meats. They go perfectly with an Italian coffee or a refreshing drink.

Venice, this unique city on water, is like a living museum. Even though you often hear that it’s too touristy, nothing beats seeing it for yourself. Watching the sun set over the canals is something you’ll remember forever.
