If you’re staying in Milan and want to escape the city for some beautiful views, all you have to do is hop on a train. In less than an hour, you’ll find yourself in one of the most stunning places in Europe. Lake Como has been a magnet for tourists, artists, and movie stars from all over the world for years. And it’s no wonder—the place looks straight out of a picture postcard.
Mountains meeting the water
Como is a deep glacial lake that actually looks like an upside-down letter „Y” from above. The most incredible part is its setting—the tall, green Alps surround the water on all sides, with charming, colorful towns nestled right at the base of the mountains. The weather here is incredibly mild, which is why you’ll see palm trees, olive groves, and tons of colorful flowers growing all around the lake.
Three gems of the lake
There are plenty of beautiful villages around Como, but three of them are world-famous:
- Bellagio: Often called the „pearl of the lake.” It sits right in the middle, exactly where the lake splits into its different branches. It’s famous for its narrow, stone alleyways full of steps, elegant boutiques, and luxury villas.
- Varenna: Considered by many to be the most romantic spot on the lake. It features a beautiful, red lakeside promenade where you can take a walk and watch the sunset.
- Como: The biggest town, located at the very bottom of the left branch of the lake. It’s a great base for exploring, with a beautiful cathedral and a funicular railway that takes you up to the hill town of Brunate. Once you’re at the top, a wonderful view of the whole area is waiting for you.
Hollywood’s favorite spot
Como is synonymous with luxury. Some of the world’s wealthiest people own properties here, including famous actors (with George Clooney being the most famous resident). Beautiful, historic villas with massive botanical gardens, like Villa del Balbianello or Villa Carlotta, are open to the public. Fun fact: they even filmed scenes for movies like Star Wars and the James Bond film Casino Royale right here.
What’s the best way to get around?
The best way to really experience the vibe of this place is by taking a ferry. Regular boats run between all the main towns. Instead of getting stuck in traffic on the narrow roads, you can just sit on the deck, sip a coffee, and enjoy the views of the Alps and luxury villas from the water.
Lake Como is proof that sometimes you don’t need to travel to the other side of the world to see something truly extraordinary!
